Important note:
· The addition of reinforcing fibers increases mechanical strength but can slightly compromise chemical resistance because fibers may be susceptible to certain chemicals.
· Reinforcement level matters: Very high fiber contents (e.g., approaching 20%) can maximize strength but degrade chemical compatibility. Industry experience suggests keeping reinforcement under 10% yields a practical balance between reduced shrinkage, maintained chemical resistance, and adequate strength.
Practical guidance:
· Use PTFE when media is highly corrosive and torque must be minimized.
· Use RPTFE when high temperature/pressure, creep resistance, or service variability require stronger seals.
· Start with 3% or 10% glass fiber reinforcement to balance strength and chemical resistance.
Cost considerations:
· 3% Glass Fiber RPTFE can be priced like standard PTFE.
· Higher reinforcements (10%, 15%, carbon fiber) require tailored quotes.
